The president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, said on Thursday that “the real reason” of the judicial process against former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva “is to prevent him from being president of Brazil again.”

“The oligarchy is not interested in democracy or justice, the real reason for the condemnation of Brother Lula is to prevent him from being president of Brazil again, and the right will never forgive him for having brought 30 million poor people out of poverty. We are with the people’s leaders, “Morales wrote on Twitter.

Brazil’s Supreme Court rejected a “habeas corpus” filed by the former president’s defense and thus opened the doors of the jail to the country’s most popular leader, sentenced to 12 years in prison for corruption.

The decision to send Lula to prison is now in the hands of the Federal Regional Court of the Fourth Region, a court of second instance that extended the penalty from nine to twelve years.

Lula da Silva has until next Tuesday to present a last resort to try to avoid his imprisonment.

Lula da Silva is the most emblematic leader of Brazil and who leads the polls of intention to vote for the presidential elections next October.
